WELCOME
Welcome to the conference
What
can we, as politicians and planners in regional authorities
around the North Sea, do to promote and deliver sustainable
transport? This is the issue to be addressed at the conference.
The
conference intends to provide regional politicians and
planners with a toolbox of best practice examples across
the spectrum of sustainable transport from around the
North Sea region. These can then be used to enable you
to deliver sustainable forms of transport in your own
regions and to assist you positively in influencing others
at national and European levels.
The
conference has attracted a number of high profile speakers
who will address the topic from a variety of European
perspectives.
It
is important to promote sustainable transport solutions.
The exponential growth in transport over the past 25 years
has brought benefits for personal mobility, social interaction
and of course, for economic development.
However, there are also negative economic,
social and environmental consequences of this growth in
transport. Many politicians and planners in seeking to
address the transportation problems in their own regions
are often unaware of practical solutions that exist elsewhere.
The North Sea Commission has convened this conference
to promote sustainable transport by addressing this gap
in knowledge and to promote the practical measures which
regional authorities can take in the field of sustainable
transport.
The
conference intends to raise the levels of awareness of
transport issues and their associated impacts on the environment
around the North Sea. It is also hoped to stimulate debate
amongst regional politicians and practitioners on how
to improve the sustainability of transport and hence the
quality of the environment of the North Sea region.
We
look forward to seeing you in Aarhus in April and to hearing
your contribution to this crucial debate. Welcome to the
NSC conference in Aarhus!
